1958 DKW Schnellaster Tieflader 3=6

Like the other models in the Schnellaster series, the Tieflader used a rather unconventional three-cylinder, two-stroke engine for power. Though a mere 896cc in displacement, the single-Solex-carburettor-equipped engine still produced a semi-respectable 42 horsepower and 57 pound-feet of torque. The 3=6 in the Schnellaster model name denoted that DKW's two-stroke triple rivalled the output from competitor's four-stroke six-cylinder engines of the day, while remaining lighter and far more compact.

A four-speed manual transmission was the sole gearbox offering, and Schnellaster models featured a fully independent suspension in front and rear. Up front, a transverse-mounted leaf spring design was used, while in the rear the company adopted a trailing arm and torsion bar set-up. Schnellaster models utilised front-wheel drive, which permitted a low floor in both van and pick-up models.

Description by seller:

Sadly, it’s time for my little emerald to move on to a new loving home. The car was purchased on18 May 2020S and is a fully restored and well-kept piece of 1950s history. It was built up from scratch and I have spent a lot of time and money to get it to its current condition. Body is clean without any rust, dents and scratches. It runs well but does require a little TLC.

The air vent on the front left fender is not original. I do, however, have the original mechanism which can be cleaned/refurbished and fitted. The fuel tank in the engine bay is an original but not connected as there is a larger auxiliary tank in use, but this can be converted back to original (the auxiliary tank as far as I am aware is not original but the tank cap is).

Exhaust is in good condition but do not believe it is original. There is no radio and no aircon, just a simple venting system.

Upgraded to 12 Volt system. Battery box with isolator switch was installed.

Papers are in order (status reflects 'Used/gebruik') and licensed to date.

Available to view by appointment in Wilderness, Western Cape.
