The Peugeot 304 is a small family car which was produced from 1969 when Peugeot saw a gap in the midsize car market. The 304 slotted in between the popular 204 and the then-new Peugeot 504. With the 204 offering a spacious passenger cabin for its class, the 304 body didn’t reinvent the wheel and used the central portion of the 204 at its core, therefore keeping development costs lower than usual, which resulted in a higher profit margin.
It was hailed a success and was noted for several advanced features under its Pininfarina-styled exterior such as independent suspension all round, front-wheel drive and front disc brakes.
The 304 was launched with an all-alloy SOHC four-cylinder 1288cc petrol engine derived from the 1130cc engine fitted to the earlier 204. A four-speed gearbox was located directly below the engine, sharing the same oil as the transversely mounted engine.
Coupé and cabriolet versions replaced their 204 forerunners in March 1970 but were withdrawn from the market, without direct replacements, in July 1972 and August 1973 respectively.
Description by seller:
Good original example of one of the rare Peugeot 304 Coupes – only a handful are known of in South Africa. It has just had a service and is used frequently as an around-town commuter.
Paint is not bad but there is a rust spot bubbling at the left rear wheel arch edge. Beading and trim are all there, but the driver side waistline unit has small damage.
The interior is original but could do with a tidy up to the seats and roof lining. Interior door panel tops have cracked, as have the dash vents.
Recently fitted with some fresh tyres and serviced with new oil, filters, wiper blades and brake adjustment.
At some stage in its life the engine was swapped so although it is the right type of engine, it isn't a matching-numbers unit. The seller will sort out police clearance and have the paperwork updated to reflect the engine number as fitted to the car currently.
Available to view by appointment in Johannesburg.
