The production of the Mercedes Benz R107 SL (Sport Light) “R” in R107 standing for Roadster, began in April 1971 and continued for 18 years becoming a status symbol of the time. Designed by the original 300SL designer, Friedrich Geiger, the R107 was the replacement for the successful W113 “Pagoda” with its focus on quality and new safety features such as:
- Strengthened A pillar
- Crumple zones in chassis
- The use of foam padding in the dashboard
- Headrests as standard
The R 107 was available with a soft-top and an optional hard top along with optional foldable rear seats to provide flexibility.
