What makes the Mercedes Benz W108 280S special?
Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor show in 1965, the W108 series set a new standard for mass produced luxury saloons.
Designed by Paul Bracq, who is also known for designing the Mercedes-Benz W113 Pagoda. He took inspiration from the W111 luxury convertibles and coupes which are often mistakenly thought of as part of the W108 series.
In 1967 to 1972 the second series of W108s was introduced with in-line 6-cylinder overhead cam engines now upgraded to 2.8 litres (M130 engine series) with the 280S fuelled by two twin-barrel downdraft Zenith carburettors and the 280se featuring mechanical Bosch injection. The W108 series was an amazing success known for reliability and durability and are sought-after collector cars today.
This Mercedes Benz 280S 4-speed manual was built in East London and is finished in white with leather upholstery in red. It was delivered new on 31 March 1971 with original registration number TP 59000 and has covered 230 490km since then. It is a numbers-matching car with the original chassis and engine numbers recorded in the original maintenance book.
The current owner bought the car from the first owner in April 1988 with approximately 70 000km on the clock as a service at Edenvale Motors was recorded in May 1988 at 72 500km. A copy of the letter of sale and cheque is still with the car.
The original maintenance booklet also gives a record of when this Mercedes-Benz moved from Johannesburg to Cape Town as the first service in Cape Town is recorded at the Ambassador Workshop in Bantry Bay in August 1994.
A true 'survivor', this car has been a trusted daily for its current owner for over 34 years. It shows signs of regular use but retains its original interior in well-worn condition and has been serviced regularly. The owner records a slight collision on the right front fender which was repaired 10 years ago.
Drives beautifully and requires a new custodian for the next 30 years as the current owner is emigrating.
Papers in order (status reflects 'Used/gebruik') and licence is up to date.
