Porsche introduced the 944 for the 1982 model year, the 944 Turbo in 1986 and the 944 S2 in 1989. The Porsche 944 S2 was powered by a 3-litre, 208bhp, naturally aspirated engine, the largest production four-cylinder at the time. The Porsche 944 S2 had a nearly even front-to-rear weight distribution (50.7% front/49.3% rear) courtesy of the rear transaxle balancing out the engine in the front.

When Porsche introduced the 944 S2 Cabriolet, it was the first 944 to feature a convertible body style. The 944 S2's body was manufactured by ASC (American Sunroof Company) in Weinsberg, Germany. Right-hand-drive units were produced for the United Kingdom, Australia and South Africa.

The Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet is a fun modern classic with the front-engine rear-wheel-drive transaxle layout which results in an enjoyable, well-balanced driving experience.

The Porsche 944 S2 was replaced by the Porsche 968 in 1992.

First delivered on the 27th of September 1989 by Porsche's official dealer in Durban, LSM.

The original book set and service booklet are present documenting extensive maintenance from new and show that this 944 probably moved to Pretoria in the mid 1990s. It remained in Gauteng until 2017 when it was purchased by the current Cape Town based owner who has done two major services with Porsche Centre Cape Town since.

This Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet is in good running and driving condition, but an independent technical inspection found that the following work is required:

  • Spark plugs
  • Air cleaner cartridge
  • Fuel filter
• Power steering pump refurbishment
• New wiper blades
• New oil pressure sender unit
• Fit new sump gasket
• Fit new front and rear shock absorbers
• Fit new tyres (front and rear)
• Repair left mirror operation
• Soft top roof stitching to be repaired at plastic window seam
